GATORS 21ST IN
NATION
San Francisco. --- In the 2002
NSCA/adidas NCAA Division II Women’s National Rankings that were released this
afternoon, the San Francisco State Gators are 21st. This is the first time this season that the
Gators have been in the top 25.
The Gators, under the
direction of head coach Jack Hyde, finished the 2002 regular season 12-4-4
including 10-1-1 in their last 12 matches and 5-0 in their last five. SFSU just missed receiving a bid to the 2002
CCAA Championships in Rohnert Park, Calif., this weekend. The Gators finished the conference season at
8-4-2 and tied UC Davis for the North Division Title (first in school
history). UC Davis advanced on
tie-breakers’ procedure.
SFSU is also tied for
third in the 2002 NCAA Division II Far West Region Rankings. The two-time defending National Champion, UC
San Diego is first and Cal Poly Pomona is second. The Gators are tied with UC Davis for third in the region. UC San Diego is sixth in the national poll
while Cal Poly Pomona is 11th and UC Davis is 27th.
Leading the Gators in
scoring is the duo of Maya Patrick (Fr, MF, Tucson, Ariz./Salpointe Catholic)
and Jenae Kee (So, D, Roseville, Calif./Woodcreek) each has 21 points. Patrick has scored a team high seven goals
while Kee leads the team with her 11 assists.
The other double digit scorer on the Gators is Alanna Bailey (So, F,
Walnut, Calif./Bishop Amat) with 14 points.
SFSU is averaging 1.9 goals per game.
Senior goalkeeper
Kelly Hoover (Cameron Park, Calif./American River College) has a 0.96 goals
against average. She has recorded 68
saves and a school record 7.3 shutouts this season. The Gators are 10-4-3 with Hoover in net for SFSU. The Gators are giving up 0.90 goals a
game.
The NCAA Division II
Women’s Soccer Championships start in two weeks. The four team CCAA Championships are this weekend at Sonoma State
with UC San Diego, UC Davis, Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal Poly Pomona are competing
at Sonoma State for this year’s women’s soccer title.
