GATORS SECOND HALF RALLY FALLS SHORT

 

San Francisco, Calif.---  The visiting Argonauts of Notre Dame de Namur University spoiled the San Francisco State University’s men’s soccer team season home opener with a 5-2 road victory at SF State’s Cox Stadium.  This afternoon’s match was both team’s 2006 season opener. 

Andres Caballero connected on the match’s first goal for Notre Dame de Namur (1-0) off a pass from Robert Morini five minutes into the first half.  Anton Del Rosario gave the visitors a 2-0 lead at the 28:15 mark, when he connected on a free kick. 

            Notre Dame de Namur increased its lead to 3-0, seven minutes into the second half as Nick Hooper connected on a pass from Emmanuel Vasquez.  Three minutes later, Anthony Putrus made it 4-0 Argonauts off a kick from Hooper. 

            Freshman forward Dylan Glass (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Alta Loma HS) scored the Gators’ first goal of the season with on an unassisted goal at the 63:01 mark.  The Gators inched closer when Glass connected for his second goal of his collegiate career on a pass from Araia Berhane (Jr, Lathrop, CA/MJC) with less than 12 minutes to go into the match.

            The Argonauts’ Edgar Rivera scored the match’s final goal with under a minute left in the game to make the final 5-2 Notre Dame de Namur.

            Notre Dame de Namur out shot the Gators 17-8 including 8-2 in the first half while Nico Arellano recorded just one save in goal for the visitors while facing just three shots on goal.  The Gator goalkeeper duo of Jaxon Roberts (Jr, Keizer, CA/Cabrillo College) and Eric Shield (So, Thousand Oaks, CA/Westlake HS) recorded five saves in the net for SF State, who will return to action this Tuesday, August 29th at 4pm for a non-conference in San Rafael against the Penguins of Dominican University.
