GATORS HOLD ANNUAL STUDENT-ATHLETE BANQUET

 

San Francisco, Calif.---  This past Tuesday, May 6, the SF State Department of Athletics held their Annual Student-Athlete Banquet in Jack Adams Hall in the Cesar Chavez Student Union the campus of SF State.  The Gators presented seven awards at this year’s banquet in the Arete, Male Athlete of the Year, Female Athlete of the Year, Freshman Male Athlete of the Year, Freshman Female Athlete of the Year, and the CCAA Dr. Hal Charnofsky Awards.

            The first award given on Tuesday evening was the Gator Freshman Female Athlete of the Year which was presented to SF State softball player Kendra Wood (DP/P, San Jose, Calif./Lynbrook HS).  Wood had an 11-8 record with a team low 1.76 earned run average for the Gators while batting .312 with 48 hits of which 9 were doubles and 7 were home runs.  She also batted in 30 runs while scoring 21 times.  Earlier this week, she was named to the All-CCAA Second Team and the Daktronics All-West Region First Team. 

            Robert Hayes (G, San Diego, Calif/St. Augustine’s HS) was presented the Gator Freshman Male Athlete of the Year.  The 2007-08 CCAA Freshman Men’s Basketball of the Year averaged 12.1 points and 2.8 rebounds per game while dishing out 61 assists and recording 50 steals this season for the Gators.  He also was named to the All-CCAA Second Team. 

            Curtis Schurkamp (Jr, 125, Escalon, Calif/Cal State Fullerton) was named the Gator Male Athlete of the Year.  The 2008 NCAA Division II All-American finished his season with a 27-14 record while placing third at the nationals in March in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  He was the NCAA Division II West Region Runner-up at 125 while earning All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference honors. 

            Krystle Mays (Jr, G/F, Long Beach, Calif/Chatsworth HS) was named recipient of the Gator Female Athlete of the Year.  The 2007-08 First Team All-CCAA Women’s Basketball Team selection averaged 12.3 and 7.4 rebounds per game while recording seven double-doubles.  She also is currently in the top ten on SF State career lists in scoring and rebounding.

            Morgan Davison (Jr, D, Arlington, VA/Radford University) was one of the Gators’ two recipients of the CCAA Dr. Hal Charnofsky Award which is given to a student-athlete in a CCAA sponsored sport for excellence on the field and our court as well as the classroom.  Davison played in 20 games this season for the Gators while scoring one goal and recording two assists.  She played a key role in the Gators’ defense allowing 1.25 goals a game while recording 8 shutouts.  The two-time All-CCAA performer also recorded one game-winning goal.

            Batbileg Bor (Sr, San Francisco, Calif/International Studies Academy) was the other Gator recipient of the CCAA Dr. Hal Charnofsky Award as well as the Arete Award.  The Arete Award is given to a SF State student-athlete that has excelled on the field and our court as well as the classroom.  Bor finished 9th this season at the CCAA Cross Country Championships while earning All-CCAA honors.  He also finished second at the USF Invitational and 23rd at the NCAA Division II  Far West Regionals.
