GATORS FALL IN REGULAR SEASON FINALE

 

San Francisco, Calif.--- In both team’s 2008 regular season finale, it was the visiting Cal State LA Golden Eagles (29-22, 23-12 CCAA) defeating the SF State Gators 10-6 in the Gators’ Senior Day.  SF State finishes its 2008 season with an 8-46-1 overall record and a 2-34 CCAA record. 

            Cal State LA scored first on a Kenny Shanahan two-out RBI single to right field that scored Rico Moreno.  SF State came back with three runs of its own in the bottom off the first capped by a Connor Buestead’s RBI single to left field that scored Ernie Munoz with the Gators’ third run.

            The game remained 3-1 Gators until the top of the fifth inning, when the Golden Eagles scored five runs with three coming off the bat of Tyler Warmerdam’s pitch-hit three-run home run to left field to give the visitors a 6-3 lead.  Ryan Hill hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth to put the Gators within two runs of Cal State LA 6-4. 

            Cal State LA added four more runs in the seventh with the final two coming on Shanahan’s two-run two-out single to center field to make it 10-4 Golden Eagles.  SF State a run in the seventh on a RBI by Hill that scored Nick Nyman.  The Gators added one more run in the ninth on a two-out RBI single by Matt Kavanaugh which scored Bobby Carini to make it 10-6 Golden Eagles. 

            Nyman and Matt Edgecombe each had two hits to lead the Gator offense while Hill had two RBIs and scored twice.  Zach Beal took the loss for SF State while Dustin Birosak (3-2) picked up the win for Cal State LA.  Shanahan finished the day 4 for 6 with three RBIs while Warmerdam had four RBIs to lead the way for Cal State LA.

            Before the game, the Gators recognized both teams’ seniors including their own Zach Beal, Connor Buestad, Matt Edgecombe, Ryan Hill, Matt Kavanaugh, Beau Moorehead, Ernie Munoz, and Evan Romanchuk.
