EDGECOMBE HITTING STREAK AT 22 WHILE GATORS SWEPT BY #4 SONOMA STATE

 

Rohnert Park, Calif.--- SF State senior Matt Edgecombe (1B/P, Concord, Calif./Fresno State University) increased his hitting streak to 22 as he had two hits in SF State’s doubleheader against the fourth ranked Sonoma State University Seawolves (25-1, 14-0 CCAA) this afternoon at SF State’s Maloney Field.  The Seawolves took both games of the doubleheader from the Gators (4-23, 1-14 CCAA) 8-6 and 13-6.

            In the opener, Sonoma State took a 1-0 lead when Kris Haycok scored on a sacrifice fly by Trevor Howell.  The Gators then scored three runs in their half of the first inning on five straight singles to open up the inning.  Bobby Carini’s (Jr, INF, Pleasant Hill, Calif/Canada College) RBI single scored Nick Nyman (Jr, INF, Susanville, Calif/Lassen College) in the second to give the Gators a 4-1 lead.

            Sonoma State then took the lead with a four-run third inning capped by Ian Bridges’ two-out two-run home run to right field to give the visitors a 5-4 lead.  Ernie Munoz (Sr, OF, Fontana, Calif/Chaffey College) scored the tying run in the Gator fifth on a ground out RBI by Edgecombe after reaching on lead-off single.

            The Seawolves retook the lead (6-5) for good when Nick Nosti scored on a Robert Walden sacrifice fly after leading off the sixth with a triple.  The Seawolves added an insurance run in the sixth and ninth innings to take an 8-5 lead.  The Gators’ Matt Kavanaugh (Sr, OF/C, Concord, Calif/Butte Junior College) hit his second home run of the game a solo shot in the ninth to make the final 8-6 Sonoma State. 

            Gary Moran (3-0) picked up the win, pitching five innings while giving up 10 hits and five runs while striking out two and walking one.  Travis Babin recorded his fourth save of the season, pitching one inning, giving up two hits and one run.  Dave Herman and Ian Bridges each had three hits to lead the Seawolf offense.   

            Edgecombe (0-2) picked up the loss for SF State, giving up 10 hits and seven runs while striking out six and walking three.    Kavanaugh finished game one 4 for 5 with two RBIs while scoring twice and Carini also had three hits and Munoz and Nyman each had two hits a piece.

            In the nightcap, the Seawolves took a 2-0 lead on a two-run home run to right field by Kyle Jones.  They broke the game open with a seven-run fourth inning keyed by a two-run home run by Tyreese McDaniel and a three-run home run by Nosti. 

            Edgecombe extended his hitting streak to 22 with a solo home run in the fourth (his second of the season) to score the Gators’ first run of the game.  Sonoma State added two more runs in the fifth to increase its lead to 11-1.  Kavanaugh’s third home run of the season and second of the game, a two-run shot in the fifth capped a three-run fifth by the Gators to cut into the Seawolf lead 11-4.  SF State added another run in the sixth to make it 9-5 Seawolves. 

            The Seawolves added two more in the seventh to increase their lead to 11-5 while Ryan Hill’s (Sr, U, Sparks, Nev/College of San Mateo) solo home run in the seventh made the final 11-6 Sonoma State.

            Rashad Tucker (3-0) picked up the win for Sonoma State, pitching four innings, giving up five hits and four runs while striking out five and walking four.  Gino Lavaezzo was 4 for 4 to lead the Seawolf offense.

            Spencer Kreisberg (So, Tigard, Ore./Los Medanos College) fell to 1-4, pitching three innings while giving up seven hits and seven runs and striking out three and walking two.  Kavanaugh and Munoz each had two hits a piece to lead SF State’s hitting attack.

            The two teams will play a non-conference game this Monday, March 24 at 2pm in Rohnert Park, California.  This will be the eighth game that the two teams have faced each other this season.  The Gators will return home this Thursday, March 27 at 3pm for a non-conference game with Hawaii-Pacific.
