#4 SONOMA STATE TAKES TWO FROM GATORS

Rohnert Park, Calif.--- The fourth ranked Sonoma State University Seawolves (23-1, 12-0 CCAA) swept a California collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) doubleheader from the visiting SF State Gators this afternoon at Seawolf Diamond in Rohnert Park, Calif., winning 19-1 and 4-1.  The Seawolves now have won 17 games in a row and are in first place in the CCAA with their 12-0 conference record.

In the opener, Sonoma State scored in every inning except the first and ninth innings.  The Seawolves took a 5-0 lead after three innings keyed by a two-run double by Ian Bridges.  They added a solo run in the fourth and added three more in the fifth on Konrad Thieme’s three-run home run.  Thieme hit his sixth home run of the season and second of the game in the sixth, another three-run home run to give Sonoma State a 13-0 lead going into the last three innings.

Sonoma State scored six more runs in the seventh and eighth innings to increase its lead to 19-0.  Matt Kavanaugh (Sr, C/OF, Concord, Calif./Butte Junior College) drove in Jake Moore (Jr, OF, Palisade, Colo./Cerritos College) with a RBI double in the Gator ninth for SF State’s lone run of the game.

SF State (4-20, 1-13 CCAA) managed just five hits off of the Seawolf starter Matt Means (5-0) including two off the bat of Matt Edgecombe (Sr, 1B/P, Concord, Calif/Fresno State University).  Means pitched 8.1 innings of five hit ball while striking out 12, walking one and giving up just one run.  John Bonifacini pitched a scoreless 0.2 innings of relief.  Beau Moorehead (Sr, P, Newman, Calif/Merced College) fell to 1-6 as he recorded the loss for SF State.

Thieme had four of the Seawolves’ 27 hits with two three-run home runs while driving in eight runs and scoring three times.  Six other Sonoma State batters had at least two hits a piece to lead the way for the Seawolves.

The Gators lost the night cap despite the pitching effort of Zach Beal (Sr, P, Oxnard, Calif/Ventura College). Beal fell to 2-5, pitching six innings, giving up nine hits and four runs (three earned) while striking out three and walking one.  Kevin Asselin (4-0) picked up the win for Sonoma State, pitching seven innings, giving up five hits and one run while striking out eight and walking just one.

Sonoma State took a 2-0 lead in its bottom half of the first inning.  Tyreese McDaniel’s RBI single in the third gave the Seawolves a 3-0 lead.  The Gators scored their run in the fifth inning on a two-out RBI single by Bobby Carini (Jr, INF, Pleasant Hill, Calif/Canada College) that scored Ernie Munoz (Sr, OF, Fontana, Calif./Chaffey College).

Nick Ramos scored an insurance run for the Seawolves in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the hosts a 4-1 lead going into the last inning of the seven-inning game.  McDaniel finished game two going 3 for 3 with two RBIs while Mark Pestorich and Kris Haycock each had two hits a piece for Sonoma State.

Munoz finished the night cap going 2 for 3 while Edgecombe increased his hitting streak to 20 with a lead-off single in the top of the seventh inning.

The two teams will conclude their weekend four-game CCAA series with an 11am starting doubleheader tomorrow morning at SF State’s Maloney Field.
