Chico, Calif..---  SF State’s softball team split its home conference doubleheader with the visiting Chico State Wildcats (12-17, 5-11 CCAA) this afternoon at SF State’s Softball Field to improve to 17-13 overall and 7-9 in the CCAA.  The Gators improve to 10-2 at home with the split and took three out of the four games from Chico State this season.

Cooper Jackson’s RBI single in the top of the second to give the Wildcats an early 1-0 lead in game one.  Megan Bera’s RBI double in the fifth gave Chico State a 2-0 lead going into the final three innings.

Krystal Shaw (7-8) had a no-hitter going into the bottom of the sixth until the Gators’ Jordanna Freemer (Sr, 1B, Oakley, Calif/Freedom HS) led off the inning with a single to right.  Shaw gave up just two hits while striking out 10 and walking four in seven innings of work to pick up the win for Chico State.  Bera and Kaitlyn Azevedo each had two hits to lead the Chico State offense.  Ashley Jackson (Fr, P, Vallejo, Calif/St. Patrick’s-St. Vincent HS) fell to 7-6 as she recorded the loss, pitching 7 innings, giving up nine hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out 7 and walking two.

In the night cap, the Gators took an 1-0 lead when Lea Cardenas (Fr, 3B, Sanger, Calif/Sanger HS) drew a bases loaded walk that scored Freemer with the game’s first run.  Gwen Cox tied the game at 1-1 in the Chico State when she scored on an error by the Gators after reaching base on a two-out triple.

SF State retook the lead with a two-run fourth keyed by a two-RBI single by Freemer which scored Danielle Chapman (Sr, OF, San Jose Calif/San Jose City College) and Karolyn Gubbine (So, OF/C, Richmond, Calif/Pinole Valley HS) to give the Gators a 3-1 lead.

Chico State cut the Gator lead in half when Cooper Jackson drew a bases loaded walk that drove in Chelsea Lundberg.  SF State then broke the game open with a four-run sixth capped by a three-run home run by Cardenas, her fifth of the season.

Kendra Wood (Fr, P, San Jose, Calif/Lynbrook HS) improved to 7-1 as she pitched 5.2 innings, giving up seven hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out three and walking two. Jackson recorded her first save of the season by pitching 1.1 scoreless innings while striking out one and walking one.  Lauren Walker (5-6) picked up the loss for Chico State.  Four Gators had two hits a piece in Gubbine, Freemer, Kendra Wood, and Kelsey Wood (Fr, C, San Jose, Calif/Lynbook HS).
