SCHURKAMP FINISHES
IN THIRD IN NATION

Gators’ junior wrestler Curtis Schurkamp
(Escalon, Calif./Cal
State Fullerton) finished third at the 2008 NCAA Division II National Wrestling
Championships this weekend at the US Cellular Arena in Cedar
Rapids, Iowa. Schurkamp
went 3-0 this afternoon in session three to finish the season at 23-13.
In
his first match of the day, he defeated Northern
State’s Chas Welch by a 4-3
decision. Then in the consolation
semi-finals, Schurkamp won by a 7-2
decision over Upper Iowa’s Tyler Mumbulo.
In
the third place match, Schurkamp defeated
Adams State’s
Arsenia Barksdale by a 9-8 decision. He
lost to Barksdale in the championship match of the NCAA Division II West
Regional Championships on March 1. The
junior is the 51st All-American that has been coached by 25th-year
head coach Lars Jensen.
As
a team, the Gators are currently 22nd with 15 points going into the
finals while Nebraska-Kearney is in first place with 100.5 points and Minnesota
State Mankato is right behind them with 100 points.
