GATORS TAKE THREE OUT OF FOUR FROM CSUSB

San Francisco, Calif..---  SF State’s softball team split their doubleheader this afternoon from the visiting CSU San Bernardino Coyotes (19-17-1, 10-8 CCAA) to take three out of the four weekend CCAA games from the Coyotes at SFSU’s Softball Field.  With the split, SF State is now 16-12 overall and 6-8 in the CCAA and are 9-1 at home.  The Gators have won six of their last seven games.

The Gators took a 2-0 lead after their half of the first inning in game one.  Kendra Wood (Fr, P/U, San Jose, Calif/Lynbrook HS) drove in the first run on a RBI double to left center.  Her sister, Kelsey, drove in the second run on a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Jordanna Freemer (Sr, 1B, Oakley, Calif/Freedom HS).

CSU San Bernardino scored three runs in its half of the fifth with the go-ahead run coming when Jordan Dahl scored.  All three runs where unearned.  SF State tied the game at 3-3 in its half of the fifth, when Kelsey Wood (Fr, C, San Jose, Calif/Lynbrook HS) drove in Monica Amburgey (Jr, SS, Monterey, Calif/Monterey HS) with the tying run.

The Coyotes took the lead back for good with a two-run sixth inning capped by a two-run single to right center by Dahl.

Debbie Shisler (4-3) picked up the win for CSUSB, pitching seven innings, giving up four hits and three runs while striking out two and walking six.  Dahl finished game one 3 for 3 with three RBIs.

Ashley Jackson (Fr, P, Vallejo, Calif/St. Patrick’s-St. Vincent HS) fell to 7-5.  She pitched seven innings, giving up six hits and five runs (all unearned) while striking out five and walking one.

In the night cap, the Gators were down 3-0 after the Coyote half of the first inning as the visitors capitalized on two errors by the Gators.  Jordanna Freemer (Sr, 1B, Oakley, Calif/Freedom HS) put the Gators on the board with a solo home run to center field in the fourth, her fifth of the season.

Jacquelyn Holdsclaw hit a solo home run in the sixth to give the Coyotes a 4-1 lead.  SF State then scored four runs in its half of the sixth capped by a three-run home run to left field by Lea Cardenas (Fr, 3B, Sanger, Calif/Sanger HS) to give the Gators a 5-4 lead.

The Coyotes made it interesting in the seventh as they had the tying run on third and the go ahead run on first with two outs, but Kendra Wood got the final batter to fly out to center field.

Tawni Baker (6-6) picked up the loss, pitching 5.2 innings, giving up seven hits and five runs while striking out four and walking two.  Kendra Wood (6-1) pitched 7 innings of five hit ball while striking out five and walking four.  She gave up four runs of which one was earned.  Cardenas finished game two 2 for 3 with three RBIs and a run scored.

SF State will return to the diamond this Monday afternoon at 1pm for a CCAA doubleheader with Chico State.  The Gators swept a doubleheader on February 22 from the Wildcats 7-6 and 2-1 at SF State.
