Dr. Michael J. Simpson has been the Director of Athletics here at San Francisco State since 1997.

He has strengthened the athletic program financially by establishing a scholarship endowment fund. He help organized the athletic department first fund-raiser (an annual event), the North Beach Veterans of Comedy Wars. The UC Santa Barbara alum has also established a recruiting and retention team for current and prospective students.

Simpson was SFSU's head baseball coach for 12 years (1986-97) in which he became the all-time winningest coach at SFSU with 326 victories. He was named NCAC Coach of the Year three times during his helm of the Gator baseball program. Simpson also was the head coach at Westmont College and went on to coach at his alma mater UCSB. In his 17-year head coaching tenure, he ranks as one of the NCAA's winningest coaches by victories and percentage.

He received his doctorate, master's, and bachelor's degrees all from UC Santa Barbara. Simpson also has served as chair of the Academic Senate's Athletic Advisory Board at SFSU, and has been the chair of the NCAA Division II West Regional Baseball Selection Committee along and a member of the NCAA National Baseball Committee.

Simpson and his wife, Susan, reside in Millbrae with their 21-year old son, Christopher.
