Cushman is in his second season as a member of the Gators' cross country coaching staff. Last fall, the SF State women's team placed 10th in the West Regional Meet and improved to 5th place at the CCAA Championships. The placing equals the best CCAA finish in school history. For the first time ever, the CCAA Women's Cross Country Freshman of the Year hailed from SF State. A most impressive accomplishment occurred when the women's team received USTFCCCA All-Academic Honors with a team GPA among the highest in the nation for cross country programs. On the men's side, the team placed 6th at CCAA and Josh Babiak earned his second consecutive All-CCAA honor and All-West Region award.

Cushman came to SF State from Santa Clara University in the Fall of 2006, where he was a volunteer assistant coach for two seasons. He coached six All-West Coast Conference Athletes while at Santa Clara.

Cushman received his Master's of Arts degree in Kinesiology from Saint Mary's College in the spring of 2006. In 2004, he graduated from Gonzaga University with a Bachelor's of Arts degree in Journalism and Sports Management. The Boise, Idaho, native currently competes in local races as well as marathons and recently ran 2:46:18 at the 2007 Boston Marathon. While at Gonzaga, Cushman earned eight Division I varsity letters in cross country and track/field from 2000-04. He also was team captain for both Bulldog teams.
