Simpson has announced the hiring of Cristina Byrne as the head women’s softball coach of the Gators. “Cristina Byrne is a welcome addition to our coaching staff. ,” said Dr. Simpson. “She is familiar with our program, the area and the conference having had experience both as a collegiate head coach locally and as an assistant in the CCAA ,” added Simpson. “She is a proven recruiter and teacher of the game. Our program and our student-athletes will continue to excel and flourish under Coach Byrne's dynamic and personable leadership.” Byrne comes to SF State from the University of California at San Diego (UC San Diego), where she was the Assistant Women’s Softball Coach/Director of Recruiting for the Tritons this past season. Prior to UC San Diego, Byrne was the Head Women’s Softball Coach at Dominican University in San Rafael, California, from October of 2005 until July 2006. “I am excited about receiving the opportunity to take over the helm of the women’s softball program at SF State,” said Byrne. “I cannot wait to get started and continue the recent success that the program has had in the last five years,” added Byrne. “Also, I am looking forward to working with the returning players from last year’s team as well as the newcomers and the administration at SF State to continue the success of the Gator softball program.” From 2004 until 2005, Byrne served her first stint as a member of the softball coaching staff at UC San Diego when she was the Assistant Softball Coach. Before being hired at UC San Diego, she was the Assistant Girls Varsity Softball Coach at the University of San Diego High School from 2002 until 2003. Byrne also was the Head Junior Varsity and Assistant Varsity Girls Varsity Basketball Coach at the University of San Diego High School from 1996 to 2003. She also has worked at two summer softball camps at San Diego State University and UC San Diego. Bryne received her Bachelor of Arts in Biology from the University of San Diego in 2002. The newest member to the Gator coaching staff played collegiate softball at San Diego State University from 1996 to 1999 and at the University of San Diego from 2000 to 2001. |
